A Christmas classic that’s good enough to watch any time of the year, this 1990 collaboration between director Chris Columbus and screenwriter John Hughes turned star Macauley Culkin into one of the biggest child actors of his generation and kick-started a decades-spanning franchise. Culkin portrays eight-year-old Kevin McCallister in the film, who’s accidentally left behind when his family boards a plane to France. When a pair of hapless burglars target Kevin’s house, it’s up to him defend it with a host of clever booby traps and ingenuity.

Parents might know him better for his music career (which isn’t exactly kid-friendly), but Ice Cube still does a wonderful job leading the cast of this family film about a fun-loving bachelor who attempts to impress the woman he’s dating by driving her kids cross-country for the holiday. The kids are determined to end their relationship, though, so he’s in for a heck of a road trip.

But when they’re unexpectedly forced to stick together, they find they each have more to learn from one another than they thought.
